Jo: I’m now self funding a CGM that loops directly to an insulin pump

50 years of needles, finger pricks, blood glucose monitoring, specialist appointments, podiatrist sessions, eye screenings, dietitians, diabetes lifestyle consultations, hypos , infections, flu jabs, blood tests the list goes on……..

I’m now self funding a CGM that loops directly to an insulin pump - yes it costs me $50 a week plus the original set up of about $800.

A CGM is a life saver - as I get to a low blood sugar level that I have no awareness of - it halts insulin delivery so I don’t go into a coma - well that’s life saving. I completely manage my Type 1 diabetes 24/7 - no holiday from this!!! No taking a break!! I’ve only ever been in hospital to have my three amazing children. So I’m not a drain on the health system - actually I’m saving them money.

CGM’s are an essential tool for people living with diabetes - I didn’t choose this disease - but I manage it head on as that’s what all people living with diabetes do. I’m not a complainer and believe I contribute 120% in everything I undertake.

Pharmac needs to experience life with diabetes and then completely comprehend what challenges each person with diabetes in New Zealand have to cope with.

I am an active Nannie with 7 super grandchildren that I want to keep up with as they grow up. My entire family are extra supportive too.
