Leave a Legacy

Leaving a gift in your Will is a way to honour the person you are, the areas of your life that matter to you and to make a lasting difference to those you leave behind.  By making a gift to Diabetes New Zealand you will support future people struggling with diabetes to live well.

For many of us with diabetes, getting well and staying well is a journey and it’s paved by good advice, encouragement, knowledge, support, access to technology and medical help along the way.  For many, there are times when their journey is hard and lonely and it’s at those times and for those people your gift will touch.

Murray’s legacy

When Murray Dear was in his late 30’s he started to feel unwell.  A visit to the doctor revealed he had developed late onset type 1 diabetes. Feeling bewildered and looking for help, he attended an information meeting, which launched his long association with Diabetes NZ and one that will endure after his lifetime.

“After my wife died, I decided I needed to think about what my legacy was going to be.  I really want people who are affected by diabetes, whether that’s children, parents, older people, partners, to have access to the best possible information so they can manage their health and get the very best out of life.”

How your gift will make a difference.

One in four New Zealanders are now affected by diabetes and this is set to dramatically rise by up to 90% by 2040.  By leaving a gift in your Will to Diabetes New Zealand you will help us turn the tide on this epidemic by helping to prevent diabetes and ensure future generations have the help and support they need, when they need it.

Provide emotional support when times are tough.

You will enable newly diagnosed children with type 1, to have access to life-changing camps for them and their whanau.  You’ll provide support networks amongst peer groups, so that people feel connected and supported.

Champion real change of people with diabetes.

Despite the rising diabetes epidemic there are simply not enough resources in the right places to help people prevent and manage their condition.  Māori and Pasifika peoples are three times more likely to develop diabetes, but less likely to have the sources to manage it.  With your help we will advocate for a national diabetes strategy that address inequities and advocate for gold standard diabetes related health care.

Your gift will empower people to live their best lives.

You will provide direct support services such as self-management courses, access to our Helpline, information packs and a range of digital self-management tools.
