In 2008  Diabetes New Zealand Inc commissioned PricewaterhouseCoopers. To conduct an update on the 2001 Type 2 diabetes - outcomes model.  The purpose to provide an indication of the potential level of government spending on health services for Type 2 diabetes under different assumptions about preventative interventions.

One outcome predicted.

By 2022, the total number of people with Type 2 diabetes (combining diagnosed and undiagnosed) is predicted to be approximately 407,000.  This is more than 150,000 above the prediction based on the 2001 prevalence projections.

Currently there are approximately 245,680 diagnosed with diabetes, type 2 accounting for 90%.  With an estimate of 1 in 4 New Zealander's living with pre-diabetes symptoms (undiagnosed), the 2022 actual number of people with Type 2 diabetes, could far exceed the 2008 predication.
