TRAVELLING WITH DIABETES

Whether you’re going away with your friends, girlfriend, boyfriend, or family, it’s important to plan ahead to manage your diabetes while you’re away – so you can take care of your diabetes and have a good time, too.

You might be travelling somewhere with a different climate or time zone, with different food and supplies available. Wherever you’re going, your routine will probably be different to usual, so being prepared is essential.

Here’s a checklist for you to review with your diabetes team before you go:

  • How will you store your insulin and supplies while travelling and away?

  • What equipment, medication and food do you need to take with you?

  • Do you need any vaccinations?

  • Do you have a form of ID and a doctor’s letter for customs?

  • Do you have travel insurance?

  • Do you and your travelling companions know what to do if you become unwell? This is especially important if you are travelling alone

  • Have you packed travel sickness and/or anti-diarrhoea medication?

  • Have you written down the emergency contact numbers for yourself, and the name and address of the insulin supplier in the area you will be travelling?
