My Food Bag partners with Diabetes New Zealand to tackle one of NZ’s biggest health challenges
My Food Bag has teamed up with Diabetes New Zealand to launch a new Diabetes Plan- including a Diabetes Friendly recipe range and set of resources to support healthier eating. This initiative tackles a major health challenge in New Zealand - offering convenient, delicious and nutritious meals for Kiwis with diabetes or at risk of type 2 diabetes.
New Zealand is at a tipping point, with type 2 diabetes rates soaring and around 20% of adults now affected by pre-diabetes[1]. Within the next 20 years, the volume of type 2 diabetes is projected to increase by 90% in Aotearoa New Zealand to around 5% of the population by 2044[2]. As the country faces one of its most pressing health challenges, Nadia Lim, My Food Bag and Diabetes NZ have joined forces to empower Kiwis at risk of or living with type 2 diabetes in the kitchen—helping them make healthier, more informed meal choices that could change the trajectory of their health.
The partnership includes a free recipe book packed full of 30 diabetes-friendly recipes, as well as tips and tricks to support Kiwis in making sustainable dietary changes. Featuring easy-to-follow recipes, and nutrition guidance, the recipe book offers a simple and delicious way to incorporate diabetes-friendly eating into everyday life, in a way that is suitable for the whole whānau. Printed copies will also be available free of charge to health professionals and an e-book will be available nationwide to download for free.
Alongside this, My Food Bag’s Diabetes Plan – a meal kit range developed with the support of Diabetes NZ - offers Kiwis a selection of at least five nutritionist-approved meals each week. Suitable for the whole family, it is designed to align with the latest guidelines for the dietary management of type 2 diabetes[3] demonstrating that while there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, nutritional therapy is key to blood glucose control, weight management, and overall well-being—playing a role in reducing pre-diabetes risk and type 2 diabetes likelihood. Recipes include balanced, delicious options such as Warming Thai Chicken Curry, Mediterranean Spinach & Feta Balls and Pulled Lamb & Cauli Couscous – with new recipes to choose from each week- all of which maintain the delicious taste that My Food Bag is known for.
These recipes have been designed with nutrition in mind including:
High quality, low GI carbs
Dietary fibre from whole foods
Ideal levels of carb, sugar, saturated fat & sodium
At least 2.5-3 veggie serves per plate
Alongside the ingredients and recipes delivered weekly, the plan includes weekly information for the first 12-weeks to help support behaviour change with expert-led nutrition content based on the latest science.
"We know that life is busy, and for many Kiwis, finding the right recipes, sourcing ingredients, and preparing balanced meals can feel overwhelming—especially when managing a health condition like type 2 diabetes," says My Food Bag Co-Founder and trained Dietitian, Nadia Lim. "We know that having easy access to nutritious, diabetes-friendly meals can make a real difference. With this new range, we’re taking the guesswork out of mealtimes, delivering expert-backed recipes straight to people’s doors so they can focus on enjoying great food that supports their health goals."
“Every day in New Zealand, more people are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or learning they are at risk. We know that making meaningful changes to diet can help manage or even delay the progression of the condition, but for many, knowing where to start is overwhelming. That’s why this partnership with My Food Bag is so important—it brings expert-backed, diabetes-friendly meal options directly to people’s doors, making it easier to take those first steps towards better health—providing real, practical support for New Zealanders navigating pre-diabetes and every type of diabetes,” says Heather Verry, CEO Diabetes NZ
The My Food Bag Diabetes Plan is available to order nationwide from the 26th of March - delivering from Sunday 6 April 2025.
