Mobile Awareness Service:
Educating and Testing
Our Mobile Awareness Service aligns with the Ministry of Health’s priority action areas of detecting diabetes early and reducing the risk of complications and enabling effective self-management.
It has been estimated there are 100,000 people undiagnosed, we want to reach and educate those most at risk
Our community service raises awareness of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, its symptoms, risk factors, and complications
Our service attends community events, expos and community locations (i.e outside libraries, supermarkets, churches and community centres)
We reach those most at risk of type 2 diabetes (South Asian, Maori, and Pacific peoples) to inform, educate and test for diabetes
What is a diabetes test?
A simple finger prick test to obtain a small drop of blood
The blood sample is placed in a disc and into a machine after 6 mins provides a result
While you wait, your blood pressure is taken and explained
You are talked through your blood glucose (HbA1c) test result and based on the result, you are referred to a GP
What is the Kickstart Challenge?
Once you have had your blood glucose (HbA1c) test result and if you received a prediabetes detection we will offer the Kickstart Challenge to you
You will receive a Kickstart Challenge pack - a Diabetes & Healthy Food Choice booklet, Healthy Eating plate leaflet, pen, pedometer, Kickstart wrist band, calendar and flipchart of food choices/snacks
Followed by a series of motivational text messages over 12 week
