Diabetes NZ Auckland Youth
Teen Camp 2022

Camp Rules & Behaviour Contract

Our aim is to provide a camp that is safe and enjoyable for everyone attending. While you need to take responsibility for your own behaviour, Diabetes Youth Auckland is responsible for your safety and requires everyone to abide by the camp rules.

This contract is to ensure that behaviour standards are clearly and fully understood. This contract also states clearly what will happen if you fail to adhere to the camp rules. The manager will review the rules upon arrival at camp.

Electronic Devices

Mobile phones are permitted, but Teen Camp is all about meeting new people, providing the opportunity to strengthen a sense of independence and experiencing a community environment. Mobile phones and other electronic devices have the potential to remove or detach teens from these benefits which is why we limit their use during camp.

Camp rules

  • For your own safety and the safety of others, appropriate, courteous and respectful behaviour to other camp members and to leaders is expected at all times and in the all places. Breaches of “appropriate” behaviour include activities such as hindering others’ sleep.

  • All mobile phones must be handed in to camp staff when requested.

  • Hand-held gaming devices, laptops, MP3 players and iPods should be left at home.

  • Valuables brought on camp should be kept to a minimum and are the responsibility of the owner.

  • No bullying – verbal, physical or via electronic devices.

  • You and your parents/caregivers will be responsible for damage to any property (and any cost incurred as a result of damage).

  • No stealing.

  • No smoking, no illegal drugs, no alcohol.

  • All rubbish and belongings must be removed from the bus.

  • All sharps whilst on the bus and in the lodge, to be disposed of in the approved medical sharps container.

  • No boys in the girls’ bedrooms at any time.

  • No girls in the boys’ bedrooms at any time.

  • Consideration to be shown to those sleeping, turn lights off and noise down at responsible hour.

  • No leaving the campsite at any other time than designated times without the prior permission of the manager.

  • Everyone is expected to participate in all activities to the best of their ability.

  • Teens found with excessive amounts of ‘junk food’ can expect to have it confiscated if team leaders believe it will affect blood glucose levels. (All food is provided.)

Management of diabetes during camp

  • Regular blood glucose monitoring is important when you are very active or changing routines. A minimum of 4 blood glucose tests must be done daily and additional tests as required. (Libre or CGM may be used if that is your normal routine.)

  • All aspects of diabetes management, including your blood glucose levels, food and insulin administration must be discussed with your medical/nursing team leader. You may be asked to perform blood glucose/ketone testing and insulin administration with your team leader present. Please DO NOT administer insulin until you have confirmed the dose with your team leader as it’s likely you will need different doses when participating in the outdoor programme. The camp endocrinologist and diabetes nurse specialist will be working alongside you and the team leaders to help you manage your diabetes during the trip.

  • The medical and nursing team will make recommendations in regards to your insulin doses and are happy to discuss this with you. If you choose to ignore the recommendations, we will discuss this with your parent/caregiver and may ask them to remove you from camp.

  • For breaches of the behaviour contract, the normal consequences and penalties will be as follows (although serious offences may result in you being sent straight home).

First Breach
Consequence:
Warning
Action: This will be discussed with the teenager and a record will be kept by the camp manager.

Second Breach
Consequence:
Parent call
Action: The parent/caregiver will be phoned by the camp manager and the situation discussed.

Third Breach
Consequence:
