Jess Kerr the White Fern

You can read more of Jess Kerr’s story in the Winter edition of our Wellness magazine.

In the Winter 2024 edition of our Wellness magazine, you can read how a trip to the doctor aged 13 years with a fake ‘sore ear’ lead to Jess’ type 1 diabetes diagnosis and what that meant for her early sporting career.

Jess shares some of the frustrations of having her health managed closely by a team of doctors and nurses, and how it felt being so reliant on others to stay well.

You can also learn about some of the other medical challenges she’s faced as a result of having diabetes and because of sporting injuries.

Jess plays for the Blaze in Wellington, and while she enjoys being a role model for diabetes, she’s not alone. Two of her teammates also have type 1 diabetes.

“I’ve noticed of late people who are type 1 come to talk to me. After a game, having that interaction is cool. One girl in Dunedin comes to pretty much every game that the White Ferns play there.”
